Albert Willard Blake, Sr., 88, of Amherst, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 21, 2019, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Oneonta, NY, he was the son of the late Albert C. Blake and Beaudine (Niver) Blake. Raised and educated in central New York, Al attended Niagara University before enlisting in the service.
An honorably discharged veteran, Al proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy. Stationed at Moffett Airfield, California, he served aboard the USS Yorktown as a radio electronics technician. Following his military service, Al returned to the Northeast. He was employed as an advertising agent and sales manager for the Schenectady Gazette, Manchester Union Leader, and WKBR before opening his own advertising agency.
A cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Al was the pillar of strength for his family. Al was a gifted writer, sharing poetry and short stories with family and friends. Known for his quick wit, he brought laughter and joy to others with his countless jokes. In his spare time, Al enjoyed gardening, cooking, and bird watching with his lovely bride, Madeleine. Al and Madeleine shared a love for Frank Sinatra and dancing the night away. A Christian, Al was a dedicated member of the St. Elizabeth Seton Parish. In his younger years, he owned trotter race horses, competing throughout New England. In 2014, with his late son and grandson, Al achieved his lifelong dream of attending the Kentucky Derby. For many years, Al played cards weekly surrounded by a table of dear friends. Al will be best remembered for his warm smile and love of family.
Al is survived by his wife, Madeleine (Caron)(Dionne) Blake, with whom he shared 21 years of marriage; three sons, Wayne Cunan, Patrick Cunan, John Thomas Blake and wife Dolores; daughter, Maureen Hamel and husband Dr. Michael Hamel; daughter-in-law, Linda Chestney; step-son, Kenny Dionne and wife Candy; four step-daughters, Donna Holden and husband Peter, Michelle Moore and partner Charle Pearson, Sandy and husband Bruce Bisconnet, and Christine Post and husband James; several grandchildren, countless great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. In addition to his parents, Al was predeceased by his son, Albert W. Blake, Jr.; step-daughter, Bobby Miller; daughter-in-law, Jean Cunan; and great grandson, Dustin Blake.
ARRANGEMENTS: His Visitation will be held in the Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 243 Hanover St., Manchester, on Friday, January 25, from 3:00 to 6:00P.M. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated in the St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 190 Meetinghouse Rd., Bedford, on Saturday, January 26, at 10:00A.M. Committal Service to follow at the Mt.
