ALFRED R. CAPEN Alfred R. Capen, 85, of Manchester, NH, died December 25, 2007, at Harborside Healthcare in Bedford. Mr. Capen was born on March 14, 1922, in Saugus, MA, the son of the late Alfred A. and Beatrice B. (Cote) Capen. He was a lifelong resident of Manchester and attended local schools. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps, in January 1943 an was assigned to the 367th Bomb Squadron, 306th Bomber Group (H). He was a wing gunner on a B17 and was shot down over Germany in September 1944. He was a POW until his release in 1945. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster. Mr. Capen was a past member of the Knights of Columbus, Last Mans Club and the Jutras Post. He married Violet O. (Langlois) on July 4, 1946. He was the owner of Als Mobil Service Station on Willow Street, until his retirement in 1984. He enjoyed winters in Florida, walking, playing cards, dancing and spending time with his family. IN HIS LIFE: Family members include; 2 sons, Norman A. Capen and his fiancée, Karen Purington, of Pembroke; Robert R. Capen and his wife Judith (Freeman) Capen, of Tilton; 1 daughter, Joan and her husband, Richard Daigle, of Manchester, 6 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Ruth and her husband, Roger Farland, and Doris Capar, all of Manchester. Mr. Capen was predeceased by his wife, Violet O. (Langlois) Capen, who died on December 23, 1989. Calling hours will be Friday, December 28, from 2 4 P.M. and 7 9 P.M. at Phaneuf Funeral Home, 243 Hanover Street, corner of Union Street, in Manchester. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, 10 AM at St. Anthony Church, in Manchester. Committal prayers and encryptment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum, in Manchester. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2 Commerce Drive, Suite 110, Bedford, NH 03110, or to the charity of ones choice, in memory of Mr. Capen.
