ALTON WARD GRAEFF
LITTLETON, NH -- Alton Graeff, age 97, passed away at his home at River Glen Senior Living facility in Littleton, New Hampshire on September 5, 2008.
He was born on July 16, 1911, a son to James and Miranda (Heister) Graeff, and grew up on a dairy farm outside of Strausstown, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Sinking Springs High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp. serving his country for eleven years while simultaneously earning a B.S. degree in petroleum engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. Following WW II, Mr. Graeff established and managed his own wholesale farm equipment business, Capital Equipment Company located in Lansing, Michigan until his retirement in 1971. During his business years, he enjoyed earning his private pilots license and flew single engine Beech Bonanza aircraft between business sites in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio.
Mr. Graeffs professional memberships included Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, Masonic Grand Lodge of Kentucky, and he was a Shriner affiliated with Knights Templar in Saginaw, Michigan.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Holbrook Graeff; two daughters, Marjorie Swenson of Peacham, Vermont, and Judith Graeff of New York; one son, Thomas Graeff of Minneapolis, Minnesota and four grandchildren.
SERVICES -- A private service will be held on September 29th. Burial will be in Peacham, Vermont.
