Anne P. Tobey, 91, of Brattleboro, VT passed away on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at her home. She was born on September 12, 1925; the daughter of the late Emily M. Pierson.

Anne grew up in Cromwell, CT and was educated in the Cromwell school system. She went to Boston University, earning a degree in physical education from Sargent College in 1948. She received her Master's degree from Ithaca College in New York in 1961. She was first employed as a physical education teacher in Barrington, R.I. where she met her husband, Jonathan Tobey. They were married in 1949. Anne also taught in Culman, AL; Ithaca, Dryden, and Mamaroneck, NY; later in the Windham Central Supervisory Union. She and her husband resided in Townshend, Vermont from 1976 until 1994. While there, they ran a cross country ski touring center on their farm. In 1984, they purchased and ran the Townshend Corner Store from 1984 -1985. They were very active in supporting Grace Cottage Hospital at the fair and throughout the year. She served as agent for the Cemetery Commission in Townshend from 19988 - 1994. Anne and Jon moved to Brattleboro in1994.

Anne enjoyed participating in many sports, especially walking, hiking, swimming, sailing and horseback riding. With her husband, she participated in track and field events at the Green Mountain Senior Games. She was an outdoor enthusiast and supported her family in their many athletic events. She was always learning and cared deeply about civil rights, social justice and the health of our natural environment. She enjoyed sewing, weaving and photography. She attended the Wednesday Night Picture Group in South Wardsboro, VT., and she loved to go to craft fairs.

Anne had a green thumb and loved to garden. She was surrounded by plants and flowers both indoors and outdoors, all throughout the year. She loved to travel and learn about people and cultures in the U. S. and in other countries. She liked learning about politics and political change.

Anne enjoyed spending many summers with her family at the beach in Madison, CT, and in Maine in her later life. She loved family gatherings.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Jonathan Tobey of Brattleboro; a son, Peter Tobey of West Windsor, VT; a daughter, Katie Tobey of Guilford, VT; 6 grandchildren: Hannah Tobey, Evan Tobey and his wife Kim, Eric Tobey, Elisabeth Moore and her husband Matt, Leah Moore and her husband Nathan, Kaden Cole of Guilford, VT; five great grandchildren, Charlotte, Ethan and Cassidy Moore, Kaya Sullivan and Rosemary Anne Moore, two sister-in-laws, Elaine Tobey of Barrington, RI and Doris Tobey of Centre Hall, PA; as well as eight nieces and nephews, eighteen great nieces and nephews, and one great, great niece and one great, great nephew.

There will be a Memorial Service for Anne will be celebrated in the spring. The KER-WESTERLUND FUNERAL HOME, Brattleboro, VT is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to Bayada Hospice, P.O. Box 8081, Brattleboro, VT 05301.
