Audrey Crandall (Hackett) Champagne PhD, 82, of Manchester, died peacefully on June 1, 2008 at her residence after a period of declining health. She was born in Arlington, MA on July 5, 1926, the daughter of the late Waldo and Doris (Horslin) Hackett. She was a 1948 graduate of Tufts University and earned her masters degree from Old Dominion University in VA. She later received a PhD in Education from the University of Connecticut. Earlier in her career, she was a teacher for the Milford School System and also taught at Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center. She moved to VA where she taught at Old Dominion University and later resided in Rhode Island where she taught at Rhode Island College, retiring as a full professor. For the past 25 years, she had been a resident of NH, most of which was in Moultonborough where she owned and managed the Arbor in Center Harbor for twenty years. She also wintered in Barefoot Bay, FL for many years. After her retirement, she volunteered to work with student teachers at Notre Dame College in Manchester. She was predeceased by her first husband, David W. Crandall, Sr, who died in 1983. In Her Life: Family members include her husband of 22 years, Richard Champagne; three daughters, Claudia Staples and her husband William of Vero Beach, FL, Linda Connell and her husband David of Manchester, and Sandy Cutting and her husband Alan of Narragansett, RI; a son, David W. Crandall, Jr and his wife Anne of Enumclaw, WA; a step-daughter, Jeanne Champagne and her husband Tony Hibbard of Hanover, MA; a step-son, Thomas Champagne of San Diego, CA;; ten grandchildren, Caroline Cutting Schruth, Alexander Cutting, Mary Connell, Katherine Connell, Patrick Connell, Ellen Connell, Lauren Crandall, Janet Crandall, Emma Hibbard and Lily Hibbard; and several nephews, nieces and cousins. Calling hours will be at Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 243 Hanover St., on Friday from 4 to 7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 PM in St. Catherine Church. Burial will take place on Monday at 11:00 AM in Middleneck Cemetery, Moultonborough.
