Listen to Obituary
  • Barbara Gummerus (née Fisher), 95, long-time resident of Ashby, MA and later Littleton, NH, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025, at the Grafton County Nursing Home in North Haverhill, New Hampshire.

  • Born on February 16, 1930, in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Barbara was a proud graduate of Fitchburg High School, Class of 1948. Her early years in Fitchburg laid the foundation for a life marked by dedication to family, community service, and quiet joys found in the everyday.

  • Barbara was the loving wife of Robert Gummerus for 53 years, until his passing in 2008. She was a devoted mother and grandmother whose love and care shaped the lives of those closest to her. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters: Susan (Gummerus) and her husband Wayne Presby of Littleton, NH; Judith Gummerus of Wrentham, MA; and Lori (Gummerus) and her husband Geoff LePoer of Tampa, FL. Her legacy continues through her cherished granddaughters: Abigail Presby Tule, Amelia Gummerus, and Julia LePoer.

  • She is also survived by her sisters Sandra Faassen of Illinois and Nancy Marshall of Pennsylvania, along with numerous nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart.

  • Barbara was predeceased by her sisters Thelma Caouette, Dorothy Andreucci, and Edith Lilius; and by her brothers Robert, Ronald, and Sidney Fisher.

  • A woman of many talents and deep compassion, Barbara dedicated nearly three decades to volunteering at Burbank Hospital. She was a past member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 361 and Ashby Historical Society. Her commitment to helping others reflected the values she held dear throughout her life. At home, she found joy in baking delicious treats for loved ones, knitting and crocheting, tending to her garden, and nurturing her beloved African violets. These simple pleasures brought beauty into the lives of those around her.

  • Her faith was an important part of her life as well; she was a member of Ashby Congregational Church.

  • The family will have a private service in the spring where she will be interred next to Bob, the love of her life, in Glenwood Cemetery in Ashby.

  • In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Grafton County Nursing Home. They work incredibly hard to bring programming and joy to their residents.

  • Barbara's warmth and generosity touched many over the years. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
