Benjamin H. Hurd, Jr.
Franklin – Benjamin Harrison Hurd, Jr., 82, died November 21, 2011 at Mountain Ridge Center after a period of failing health.
He was born in Laconia, NH on February 16, 1929, the son of Benjamin and Vallie (Bean) Hurd. Benjamin was raised in Laconia, attending Laconia schools through grade 12.
Benjamin was a Korean War veteran, serving in the US Army from 1952-1954. He was the Colonel's driver for part of those years.
He worked at Scott & William Plant in Laconia, drove taxi in Laconia and Franklin and also worked as a spinner at JP Stevens in Northfield. He had also worked at Acme Staple Co for 19 years and 12 years at Webster Valve Co in Franklin, retiring in 1991.
Benjamin enjoyed playing card games, going for long walks, boating, fishing, including ice fishing.
He held a lifetime membership at the VFW 1698. He was also a call fireman for Franklin Fire Station from 1962 to 1969 and a member of the Veterans Fire Fighters.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Anna Hobbs and Dorothy Hurd and a brother, Arthur N. Hurd.
Surviving family members include his wife of 58 years, Evelyn E. Hurd of Franklin; four children, Andrew Hurd and wife Loretta of Franklin, step-son, Raymond E. Dow and wife Bonnie of Northfield, son, David A. Hurd and wife Connie of Belmont, NH and daughter, Brenda E. Hunt and husband Loren (Dave) of Laconia, NH; 10 grandchildren, Christopher and wife Jennifer Hurd of Marston, NC, Renee Kimball of Sanbornton, NH, Kimberly Joyce and husband Keith of Clarksville, NH, Sarah Ladd and her husband Brian of Gilford, NH, Stacy Casella of Lakeport, NH, Aimee Hunt of Laconia, Diana Hurd of Belmont, NH, step grandchildren, Edward Dow and wife Paula of Candia, Shane Dow and wife Jillian of Tilton, NH and Adam Dow and Jessica of Northfield; 11 great grandchildren, Dillon Hurd, Elizabeth Kimball, Ashley Kimball, Jacob Joyce, Tyler Joyce, Megan Dow, Zackary Dow, Britney Dow, Zoe Tilton, Dillon Casella and Braydon Casella; 6 sisters in-law and 3 brothers in -law and nieces, nephews and cousins.
His Memorial Service will be held at the Phaneuf Funeral Home, 172 King Street, Boscawen on Saturday Nov. 26th at 11:00AM with Pastor Larry Morris, Living Hope Community Church, officiating. The American Legion Post 49 will provide an honor guard. Interment will be at the NH State Veterans Cemetery on Monday at 2:30PM with military honors.
