The Capuchin Franciscan friars mourn the death of their brother, Fr. Bernard James Campbell, O.F.M. Cap. who died in Manchester, NH on November 25, 2019 at the age of 83.

Bernard was born to John P. Campbell and Catherine (Condron) Campbell in Brooklyn, NY on December 18, 1935.

He attended Holy Cross Elementary School [Brooklyn 1941-49]; Bishop Loughlin HS [Brooklyn 1949-51], Erasmus HS [Brooklyn 1951-1953]; Brooklyn College Night School [1954-59] and St. Philip Neri Seminary [Boston 1960-61].

Bernard entered the Capuchin Franciscans on August 31, 1961 and received the name Charles Borromeo. He attended St. Anthony College [Hudson, NH 1962-65] earning a BA in Philosophy; Mary Immaculate Seminary [Garrison, NY 1965-1969] earning a MA in Theology, where he also pronounced perpetual vows on October 7, 1967. Fr. Bernard was ordained to the priesthood on November 9, 1968 at the Sacred Heart Church, Yonkers, NY.

Following his ordination, Fr. Bernard was stationed at St. John the Baptist Friary, NYC [1969-70] where he began his life-long ministry of 50 years working with persons with disabilities. He received a MA in Special Education at Deafness Research and Training Center, School of Education, NYU [1971] and a Certificate of Advanced Educational Specialization in Religious Education, Boston College, MA [1980]. Father was a member of C.A.S.E. Council for Advancement and Support of Education [1973-1980] at Boston College.

Father continued his dedicated ministry and resided with the Capuchin fraternities in the following locations: St. Michael Friary [Brooklyn 1970-72]; St. Anthony Friary [Hudson, NH 1972-79]; St. Anthony Friary [Manchester, NH 1979-85]; Blessed Sacrament Friary [1985-97] and St. Anne-St. Augustin Friary [Manchester NH-1997-2019].

Fr. Bernard was lovingly support by his brothers John Campbell [Betty Anne] and Michael Campbell [Anne] and their families along with Sister Pauline Lafond, P.M. his life-long friend and ministerial companion.

A wake will be held at the Whalen & Ball Funeral Home,168 Park Ave., Yonkers, NY 10703 Friday, November 30, 2019 from 3:00 to 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, NY on Saturday at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at the Province of St. Mary Cemetery, Yonkers, NY. A luncheon will be held at the Schools of the Sacred Heart cafeteria.

A special Memorial Mass will be held at St. Anne-St. Augustin Church, 383 Beech St., Manchester, NH on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at 1 PM. Light refreshments will follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations In Memory of Fr. Bernard Campbell may be made to the Province of St. Mary and sent to the Capuchin Development Office, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, NY 10703.
