Bernard Francis Colburn, 81, died Friday, June 18, 2021 at DHMC in Hanover, NH after a brief illness.
He was born in Brattleboro on May 23, 1940, the son of Frank V. and Minnie L. (Brown) Colburn. Bernie was a graduate of Brattleboro High School and served in the United States Army. Upon his return home, Bernie worked a variety of occupations including bookbinding at the Book Press of Brattleboro (also operated by The Stephen Greene Press and later by a Boston Publishing Company) as well as for the State of Vermont at the Brattleboro District Court.
Bernie was a devoted son, uncle and friend. He returned to his childhood home to support his mother after his father's death in 1971. Bernie was a lifelong resident of Vermont.
He enjoyed athletics in high school and zooming the countryside on his motorcycle as a young man. He remained a sports enthusiast throughout his lifetime. Bernie also enjoyed collecting coins and stamps as well as history, literature, classical movies and having philosophical and political discussions. Bernie maintained a positive outlook during his life. He, just days before passing, expressed his jovial humor speaking to the family of his next adventures.
Bernie was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Minnie (Brown) Colburn; his nephew, Jorge deVillafane; his wife, Carolee (Dixon) Colburn; and his sister, Joan (Colburn) deVillafane. He is survived by his long time devoted partner, Jeannette Prukalski and her daughter, Jaime Woronecki of Bellows Falls, VT; Jaime's children - Morgan Vaudrien, Taylor Woronecki and Aaron Woronecki of Connecticut; as well as his nephew, C. Scott deVillafane (wife - Ann) of Gardner, MA; niece, Brenda Harwood of Brattleboro, VT; niece, Theresa deVillafane-Moll of Lunenburg, VT; five grand nephews; one grand niece; four great grand nephews; and one great grand niece.
Kerr Phaneuf Funeral Home will coordinate a private family farewell at the Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Brooks Memorial Library 224 Main St., Brattleboro, VT 05301; or the Elks Lodge #1499, 75 Putney Rd, Brattleboro, VT 05301.
