LITTLETON, N.H. ----Bertram Louis Knopf, 79 of Littleton, NH died July 20, 2003 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, NH.
He was born on March 14, 1924 in Bridgeport, CT, the son of Henry L. and Lois (Mickens) Knopf.
He was a graduate of Milford High School. A veteran of WW II he served as an Aviation Mechanic 2nd Class. He was stationed in Hawaii and aboard the USS Casco, a seaplane tender, in Saipan. In recent years he and his wife enjoyed traveling to USS Casco Reunions all over the United States.
In 1955 he married Betty Greene.
He worked for 20 years at Singer Manufacturing Company in Bridgeport, CT until their operations were moved overseas. In 1975 he went to work for Burndy Corporation in Norwalk, CT. The next year when Burndy opened a new plant in Littleton, NH, he and his family were transferred there. He worked as the Maintenance Supervisor for 17 years until his retirement. In 1987 he was honored as a Burndy Medalist Winner (silver) along with 7 others from all over the world for his contributions to the company. This was awarded to him For his exceptional ability in anticipating and resolving plant and equipment maintenance issues in the most timely, cost-efficient manner, resulting in superior total facility management.
He was an avid sailor, having belonged to the Milford Yacht Club for almost 40 years. He began sailing Snipes at age 15 and then after the war began sailing Stars, a class boat. He and Betty bought Berbet in 1955 and spent summer weekends racing on Long Island Sound and also traveling up and down the East Coast as far as Baltimore towing Berbet on a trailer behind their station wagon to race in various regattas.
Upon moving to New Hampshire he rekindled an old interest in golf and spent much time playing in various golf leagues. He had been a member of both the Bethlehem Country Club and Maplewood Country Club.
He was an active member of the Howard-Shawney V.F.W. Post #816. He held various offices, was on the firing squad, and ran Monday night Bingo. He was also a member of the Strong-Norse American Legion Post.
He and Betty loved to garden and spent many hours working in their beautiful flower and vegetable gardens.
Surviving family members include his daughter, Elizabeth Moreau of Saco, ME, and a sister, Barbara Knopf, of Stratford, CT. He is predeceased by his wife, Betty.

SERVICES: The family will received friends on Thursday, July 24th from 10:00-11:30 a.m. at the Pillsbury Funeral Home, 101 Union Street, Littleton, NH. A Memorial Service followed at 11:30 a.m. at the Funeral Home. Final committal rights and Military Honors will be held graveside in the Glenwood Cemetery in Littleton following the Memorial Service at the Funeral Home.
