Betty J. Riley

Betty Jane (McGhee) Riley, 95, of Hooksett, NH, passed away peacefully at Concord House in Concord, NH on June 18, 2018.

Betty was born on March 7, 1923 in Carolina, WV, the oldest daughter of Edward J. McGhee and Jane D. (Alkire) McGhee. Her brothers, Edward Jr. (Bo), William, and Robert predeceased her. Surviving siblings, both residing in Florida, are her sister, Patricia Ainsworth and her brother, Dick.

Betty grew up in West Virginia, graduated from Shinnston High School in 1941, and attended Fairmont State College for 2 ½ years taking art courses to become a dress designer. Betty married Denzil on March 19, 1944 in Fairmont, WV. (He predeceased her in 2002). They moved to Akron, Ohio where she worked for B.F. Goodrich for one year making military equipment. Betty then became a stay-at-home Mom raising four children (all of whom are surviving), Don Riley and his wife, Joy, of Hooksett NH; Peggy Plummer and her husband, Bob, of Spring Hill, TN; Becky Funk and her husband, Roy, of Hooksett, NH; and Lora Proudley and her husband, John, of Atwater, OH. Among her many accomplishments while raising four children was her art of cooking – her baked chicken and pies were the best! She was an at-home seamstress making simple clothing alterations as well as creating formal wedding dresses. She also volunteered in many capacities during her years as a member of the Goodyear Heights Presbyterian Church; volunteered for Special Olympics, Goodyear Heights Good Neighbors, and also the Western Electric Pioneer Group. In 2010 Betty moved to Hooksett, NH to be close to several family members. She enjoyed making and donating fleece blankets to pediatric units at CMC, Elliot Hospital, and several veteran's groups. Betty could also be seen two to three days each week walking the Central High School running track at Livingston Park in Manchester, NH. She was a very caring Christian willing to give of herself.

Betty is also survived by eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren each of whom were special in her life.

The family wishes to thank the kind and loving staff at Colonial Poplin and Poplin Way in Fremont, NH, as well as the wonderful staff at Hospice House in Concord for their care and family support.

A memorial service is planned at Grace Chapel Nazarene Church, 7 Silver Ave., Hooksett at a later date this summer. Urn burial will take place at Hillside Memorial Park in Ellet, OH at the convenience of the family. Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Manchester, NH is in charge of arrangements. Please check the funeral home website at www.phaneuf.net to view an online Tribute, send condolences to the family, as well as date and time of future services and details.
