CARL G. HILGENBERG
Carl G. Hilgenberg, of Littleton, New Hampshire, died at Littleton Regional Healthcare on Friday, October 30, 2015, after a brief illness. Carl was born in Mt. Kisco, New York in 1937 and moved to Baltimore two years later. He attended the Gilman School, Rumsey Hall School, and graduated from St. Pauls School in Brooklandville, Maryland in 1956. He received a B.A. from Goddard College in 1961 and moved to Franconia in 1963.
Carl then operated a ski lodge in Franconia for 10 years, and also owned and operated the Village Taxi Company, a long distance taxi service that served such notable hotels as The Sunset Hill House, Pecketts on Sugar Hill, the Mountain View House, and the Spaulding Inn Club. After selling the ski lodge in 1972 Carl purchased Westwind Vacation Cottages in Franconia and operated that business until his retirement in 1999.
In 1976 Carl also purchased the local school bus company, Franconia Services, and likewise operated that until 1999. While he was President of Franconia Services, he served as a Director of the New Hampshire School Transportation Association for over twenty years. In 1980 his bus company won the National School Transportation Association's Golden Merit Award for superior service and safety.
Carl was one of the founders of Ski 93 and was that association's first Executive Director. He also served as a Director of Copper Cannon Camp, the Franconia Chamber of Commerce and for a while was Scoutmaster of Franconia Boy Scout Unit 217. He was also a long-time member of the Franconia Fire Department, the Littleton Elks Club, and the Littleton Rotary Club, of which he was President 1985-86. Carl was also an active parishioner of All Saints Episcopal Church. He served on the vestry of the Church, and was the volunteer Clerk of the Works for the construction of the All Saints Parish Center in 2003.
Carl further volunteered his services to the Town of Littleton as the Clerk of Works for the Town's replacement of a bridge on Highland Avenue and more recently as Clerk of the Works for the construction of the new Town Highway Garage. He was a loyal friend and generous supporter of numerous local causes.
Carl kept busy during his retirement pursuing his varied interests, including collecting and restoring antique tractors and automobiles. He enjoyed working in the shop at his house on the various old pieces which he acquired, and enjoyed cruising in his boat on the Connecticut River and Lake Memphramagog.
Carl is survived by a brother, John C. Hilgenberg, of Stevenson, Maryland, and a sister, Elizabeth Heminway, of Damariscotta, Maine, as well as by his nieces Crady Seymour, of Reisterstown, Maryland, and Olivia Heminway Petit, of Lewes, Sussex, England, a nephew, Rodney Twells, of Pepper Pike, Ohio, and by numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.
SERVICES: A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, December 5th at 11:00 a.m. at the All Saints' Episcopal Church in Littleton.
