Charles Proctor “Charlie” Black, 80, died Monday, March 6, 2023, at the Granite VNA Hospice House, Concord, NH with his loving family by his side. He was born on August 14, 1942, in Ayer, MA, the son of the late Charles Edward and Charlotte (Proctor) Black.
He was the beloved husband of almost 50 years to Celia M. (Tischler) Black. They were married on June 10, 1973, in Warner, NH.
Charles served in the US Air Force during the Vietnam era. While enlisted, he discovered his talent for storytelling and then began a career in the radio business. He enjoyed being a disc jockey, writing award winning commercial copy and was a talented voice over artist. He was an entrepreneur and later started his own advertising specialty company in Ventura, CA where he started his family. Charles spent time with his family in the Portland, Oregon area before moving back to New Hampshire, his home state that he loved so much. Later in life, Charles followed his passion and began writing many short stories. Shortly before his death, he published his first book, The View from Big Rock, which outlines his memories of growing up in a small town in New Hampshire.
Charles was a gun enthusiast and enjoyed sharing this hobby with his friends and family. He was a history buff and loved travelling the US visiting historic sites. Any weekend he could be found taking a leisurely drive with his wife Celia, exploring and taking in new sights. He was an avid reader and storyteller, and nothing brought him more joy than telling a story to one of his grandchildren. Charles also had a great love for animals and cooking.
In addition to Celia, Charles is survived by daughter, Kelli Riggs and husband, Jeff Riggs of Bow, NH; daughter, Robyn Leppard and husband, Craige Leppard of Concord, NH; son, Benjamin Black of Laconia, NH; and four grandchildren, Camryn Marquis, Ryleigh Riggs, Nicholas Marquis and Ryder Riggs.
