Dayton M. Spaulding, age 88, of Manchester, NH died on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at the Ridgewood Center in Bedford, NH. He was the husband of Concepcion (Garcia) Spaulding, whom he married on January 30, 1957 in Spain.
He was born in Prattsville, NY on March 25, 1922, the son of the late Harry and Elsie (Barlow) Spaulding. He was raised in New York. He enlisted in the US Army and is a WWII veteran having served in the Pacific Theatre on the island of Saipan. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sgt in 1945.
Dayton was a college professor at Plymouth State University from 1965 â 1987. He taught Health Education and Spanish. He was active as the Basketball Coach.
IN HIS LIFE:
After returning home from the service, Dayton continued his education at the University of Oklahoma. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education. While there he played basketball under Bruce Drake and the team finished #2 in the country. He later went on to Syracuse University, where he obtained his Masters Degree in Science Education. At Boston University, he received his Doctorate of Education in 1974.
He was a member of the University of Oklahoma Alumni. He loved University of Oklahoma (or OU) Sooner Football and his NY Yankees. He is a former member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. An active athlete, he enjoyed golf, baseball, tennis, swimming, trout fishing and writing poetry.
Besides his wife of 54 years, he is survived by 1 son: Christopher Spaulding of Columbia, South America; 2 daughters: Deborah Spaulding Rainey of Concord, MA, Michelle Denise Caraccio of Amherst, NH; 2 sisters: Marion Billings of Ocala, FL, Sandra Richardson of Pensicola, FL; 6 grandchildren: Michael Spaulding, Matthew Spaulding, Andrew Spaulding, Joseph Caraccio, Natalie Caraccio, Jack Caraccio; several nieces and nephews.
SERVICES:
A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at 1:00pm in the Phaneuf Funeral Home, 172 King Street, Boscawen, NH 03303 followed by burial with Military Honors at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, Daniel Webster Highway, Boscawen, NH at 2:00pm.
