Donald E. Swift

Donald "Doc" E. Swift, 86, of Hinsdale, NH passed away on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at his residence in Hinsdale. He was born in Thetford, VT on March 11, 1927, the son of the late Kenneth J. and Carrie I. (Root) Swift.

Doc has been a Hinsdale resident for over 40 years, previously residing in Brattleboro. He was educated in the Thetford, VT school system, graduating from Thetford High School. Donald served his country in the U.S. Air Force as a builder/maintenance man for 20 years before his retirement from the military. He then went on to work at Bridgeport. Doc had a natural talent for detailed woodworking and enjoyed crafting many unique things. He enjoyed carpentry, bowling, collecting guns, tending to his vegetable garden and most of all spending time with his family. Doc was a member of the American Legion.

He is predeceased by a daughter, Cheryl Swift; a brother, Merlin "Diz" Swift; and three sisters, Margaret Hendricks, Helen Hagopian, and Priscilla Loudon.

He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, June (Wetherby) Swift of Hinsdale; four sons, Stewart Swift and his wife Peggy of IN, Gary Swift of TX, Larry Swift and his wife Phyllis of TX, and Larry Riley and his wife Cecile of Brattleboro; three daughters, Brenda Phillips and her husband Bob of Putney, Linda Castine and her husband Gary of Dummerston, and Debra Lavoie and her husband David of FL; a brother, Neil Swift of NH; a sister, Pat Robertson of MA; thirteen grandchildren, many great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews , cousins and friends.

A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 11:30 AM at Oaklawn Cemetery, Meetinghouse Rd., Hinsdale, NH. The Ker-Westerlund Funeral Home, 57 High St., Brattleboro is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Donald's name to Make-A-Wish Foundation, 100 Dorset St, South Burlington, VT 05403 or a charity of choice.
