DOUGLAS PARKER MCKOWN
LISBON, NH Douglas P. McKown, age 90, passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2007 at the Lafayette Center in Franconia, NH.
Doug was born on June 5, 1916, the second son to Nathan and Beatrice (Hurd) McKown at 62 School Street in Lisbon, NH.
As a young lad, Doug ran errands, picked berries, dug dandelion greens, and did most any odd job he could do to earn money during the depression. He later worked in Chamberlains Meat Market as well as the First National Stores in Lisbon, NH, Wells River and Norwich, VT, and became Manager of the First National Store in Hanover, NH. Doug enlisted in the U. S. Army on February 16, 1943, completed Basic Training and transferred to the 10th Mountain Division in Colorado, after which he was sent to Northern Italy where he served as a Medic. He was mustered out of the service on November 25, 1945 as a Staff Sergeant.
Doug returned to Lisbon and was employed at Parker and Youngs prior to applying to the U. S. Post Office, where he was employed as the Village Postal Carrier. He and his wife, Ruth, resided in the same house on School Street in which he was born. He was a member of the Congregational Church, Masonic Lodge, and the V.F.W. Howard Shawney Post #816. Doug was an avid golfer, played tennis, and was short stop for the village baseball team. At the age of eighty, he and a friend climbed Cannon Mountain.
Doug is survived by his wife, Ruth McKown of Lisbon, NH; a son, David McKown of Pittsfield, MA; two stepsons, Richard Robinson and James Robinson; two sisters, Nathalie Murray and Jocelyn Jamieson; and several nieces and nephews.
SERVICES A Celebration of Dougs Life will be held later in the spring.
