Eleanor S. Couris, 86, of Manchester, NH died unexpectedly on January 24, 2005 at Catholic Medical Center. Mrs. Couris was born on June 4, 1918 in Philadelphia, PA the daughter of the late Michael and Anna (Patrick) Smarkola. She attended J.W. Hallahan Girls High School in PA. After graduating from high school, Eleanor worked as a secretary for several health insurance providers in the Philadelphia area. She was also a nurses aide during World War II. She was a devout Christian and a long time communicant of several churches. In 1943 she married Joseph Couris and the couple relocated to New Hampshire in 1969. She was an executive assistant in the life insurance industry where she worked for 23 years in the Nashua area. Eleanor was an avid gardener who treasured her rock and flower gardens. She adored pets, particularly her cats. She enjoyed snow skiing with her family and cherished the time she spent with them. Mrs. Couris was a very caring person who gave graciously of herself to others in need. To know her was to love her. Family members include; her husband of 61 years, Joseph Couris; three sons, Michael J. Couris of Hooksett, Geoffrey J. Couris of Amherst and Matthew J. Couris of Nashua; three grandchildren; one great grandson; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Couris was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Smarkola. There will be a reception on Thursday, January 27th from 2:30 until 3:30 PM at Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 243 Hanover Street in Manchester with a Memorial Service to follow at 3:30 PM Interment will take place at a later date at the New Hampshire State Veteran Cemetery in Boscawen, NH.
