Eliese S Joost, age 98, of Hollis, NH, passed from this world, Thursday, September 4th, 2014 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's.
She was born in Jersey City, NJ to Simon and Nora Jacobs. As a child, she moved to Wyk auf Fohr (Germany), returning to Jersey City as a teenager. She spent most of her life in South Orange, NJ before moving to New Hampshire in 1998.
The only daughter in the family, she adored her brothers and they her. Eliese was married for 42 years to her beloved husband Fred before his death 23 years ago. She was devoted to Fred and was the unseen force as he worked hard to make Town Hall Delicatessen in South Orange into a legendary business. She was his bookkeeper, bow maker, and assistant at Christmas time when they filled orders for beautiful gift baskets and stocked shelves. Eliese was involved with the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and PTA while her children were in school. She was a Deacon and taught Sunday School at the First Presbyterian and Trinity Church in South Orange. Her family and friends will remember her sewing and crocheting whenever she had the chance and she always enjoyed a good game of Rummikub, Uno or Gin Rummy. She loved visiting Martha's Vineyard where she and Fred summered for many years because it reminded her so much of the beautiful island she grew up on. Eliese spent her final years under the loving care of the staff at Langdon Place whose love and devotion to her touched her family greatly.
She is survived by daughter Cathy and her husband Louis Lovas of Hollis, NH; son Ron and his wife Lori Joost of Morris Plains, NJ; grandchildren Alyssa, Kira and Carly Lovas of Hollis, NH, Heidi Joost of Crowne Point, NY, Greta Joost of Schenectady, NY, Matthew Joost of Maplewood, NJ, Judy Joost of Morris Plains, NJ, Cheryl Joost of Boonton, NJ, Patti Stenzel and her husband Dan of Summit, NJ and Inger Lessier and her husband Kevin of Nashua, NH; 3 great-grandchildren, Peter and Margaret Benway, and Abigail Stenzel; sister-in-law Anna Jacobs of Flagtown, NJ, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Beside her husband Fred, she was predeceased by her son Fred G Joost and her brothers Simon, Oluf, Harry, Johnny and Peter Jacobs.
A celebration of her life will took place on Monday, September 8, 2014 at The First Church of Nashua, Nashua, NH. Burial will follow on October 25, 2014 at 10:30 am at the Hollywood Memorial Cemetery in Union, NJ. Online guest book is available at www.phaneuf.net.
