Ellen Natalie Schwiderski passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 27, 2021, in the comfort of her home, surrounded by loving family.
Ellen was born on September 11, 1929 in Riga, Latvia, a daughter of Therese (Gnedler) and Eduard Torster. After advanced studies, Ellen was employed as an Executive Secretary for the newspaper Rheinische Post in Düsseldorf, Germany.
At age 29, Ellen married her darling Ernst, a research scientist who had been recruited by the United States Navy in 1958. They first lived in Dahlgren, Virginia, before building their home in Fredericksburg. After nearly 40 years, the couple retired to New Hampshire to be close to their daughter Ute.
A dedicated wife and mother, Ellen was extremely proud and supportive of her family, near and far. Ellen and Ernst enjoyed attending many scientific meetings on 4 continents. She shared a strong bond and special memories with her daughter. Ellen was especially fond of her attentive son-in-law.
Ellen was an accomplished artist, painting beautiful landscapes. She was a talented bridge player, playing cards with her ladies group, as well as with family and friends. Ellen loved to snuggle, knit, bake delicious cakes, read biographies and medical research (and explain to friends what their physicians had told them), listen to music, watch ballets and operas, get massages, garden, swim, walk, bike, and travel. She enjoyed watching birds, chipmunks, squirrels, and flowers. Ellen treasured visits from all family and friends, and "Grandma Ellen" cherished visits from her adorable children and pets.
Ellen will be best remembered for her loving heart, gentle soul, kindness, generosity, elegance, gorgeous blue eyes, expressive face, and true interest in people. As Ernst often said, "Ellen is the most beautiful girl in the world".
Ellen is survived by her loving family, her daughter Dr. Ute Ellen Schwiderski ("Utchen") and her husband Paul (Ellen's dear boy, "Paulchen"), her sisters Emmy and Valda, sister-in-law Silvia, brothers Oskar, Karl, and Otto, and several nieces and nephews (Hasel, Torsten, etc.) of Germany, Canada, and New Zealand, as well as her "kids", her "girls" (Pat, Lulu, Amanda), and extended family and friends. In addition to her parents, Ellen was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Dr Ernst Walter Schwiderski, and brothers Paul and Richard.
Ellen/Ello/Mom, you will be forever in our hearts.
