Elsie J Hartigan of Deerfield, NH passed away peacefully at home on March 25, 2014 after a brief decline in health, she was 91. "Dolly" was born in Keene, NH on June 12, 1922 to Salvi and Elsie (Powell) Columbus and for 70 years was married to the love of her life, William C. (Bill) Hartigan who passed away in October of 2013.
Dolly and Bill enjoyed 30 years of retirement together traveling extensively throughout the United States, and visiting all but Hawaii. If they could have driven, Mom and Dad would have been there too. It's just as well though because they don't accept New Hampshire money anyway. Dolly and Bill finally settled down and spent their last years wintering in Zolfo Springs, FL. During her lifetime Dolly was employed by the IRS, the US Census Bureau, and the school system of North Reading, MA.
She was a loving mother to five sons and enjoyed spending time in the outdoors with them canoeing, hiking, camping, and fishing. She was always ready and willing for adventure, loved spending time with her boys and grandchildren, enjoyed reading, cooking, baking, sewing, and crossword puzzles.
Dolly is survived by her sister Annie Auld of Gloucester, MA, her brother Alexander Columbus and his wife Carolyn of Raymond, four sons, Robert and his wife Joyce of Newburyport, MA, Richard of Thornton, Daniel of Suncook and David of Deerfield. She is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Dolly was predeceased by her eldest son William F Hartigan and her brother Salvi Columbus.
ARRANGEMENTS: Calling hours at Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 250 Coolidge Avenue, Manchester, NH, will be Thursday, April 24, from 2 to 4 p.m. Burial will be private.
