Elwood C Tenney, of Brattleboro, Vermont, passed away peacefully at the age of 95, on December 12, 2022, at the Thompson House on Maple Street where he had been a resident. Elwood was born September 30, 1927, to Gladys and Guy Tenney, on Maple Street across from where the Thompson is now.
Elwood graduated from Brattleboro High School in 1945.
Except for a 1946 - 1947 stint in the Army as a radio man in the Signal Corps in the Philippines, Elwood lived and worked in Brattleboro his whole life.
As a youngster, Elwood worked with his father at CH Eddy Soda. The career he told the most stories about, was driving a truck in the hills of Windham County, summer and winter, delivering for De Witt Grocery. Later he worked in Linograph printing at American Stratford. He also clerked for Aubuchon and Brown and Roberts.
Evelyn C Chandler was the love of Elwood's life and he loved telling of how he wooed Evelyn with strawberries when she was working for Holstien-Friesien. They married on August 9, 1952, in a Unitarian service officiated by Reverand Fred Miller.
Their dog, Pippin, was a centerpiece of Elwood's life. Elwood loved to dance the polka with Evelyn on Saturday nights watching the Lawrence Welk show and Pippin would join them. Elwood always supported Evelyn's love of gardening, helping her maintain her azalea, African violets, and flowering cactus and a beautifully landscaped yard.
When Evelyn passed away on October 24, 2001, Elwood donated her flowering cactuses to the West Brattleboro post office.
Elwood was an avid bowler, crossword puzzle aficionado, and enthusiastic singer.
Up until the end of his life, Elwood would sing to and with anyone who came to visit.
Because of Elwood's love of dogs and devotion to Pippin, memorial contributions may be made to the Windham Humane Society, 916 West River Road, Brattleboro Vermont, 05301.
