Ernest Ernie Leonard
On Friday, July 20, 2018, Ernie Leonard, passed away. Ernie was 89 years old and is survived by his loving wife and devoted caring partner of 63 years, Shirley Colby Leonard.
Ernie was born in Pelham, NH, in the home of Earl and Rose Leonard. He worked in his 20's on the Colby brother's farm in Litchfield, NH. Where he met Shirley Colby, they married in 1955 at the Litchfield community church. Ernie served in the US Air Force as a Master Sergeant for four years and was honorably discharged, as a radio engineer stationed in Japan during the Korean war. Ernest graduated from UNH with a degree in Agriculture Management on June 12, 1960. Ernie was employed by Agway and worked in advertising in Syracuse and then as an independent agricultural consultant based in NH. Shirley and Ernie lived in Liverpool, NY for 19 years and moved back to NH in 1983. They settled in Londonderry, NH, where they continued to raise their family.
Ernie was the father to four children with Shirley. Janice Leonard Loz of Warner, NH, Mark R. Leonard of Newton, MA, Gregory E. Leonard of Keene, NH and Douglas W. Leonard of Palermo, ME. He was a patient and loving father who was always willing to talk with and listen to his children whenever they needed him. He enjoyed being outdoors, woodworking and home improvement projects and camping on Lake Umbagog in Errol, NH. He loved gardening, American history, following politics, spending time with his pet dogs, being outside with his family, watching English comedies and mysteries with Shirley.
He loved to spend time with his grandchildren and with a twinkle in his eye, he reveled in watching them become fiercely independent thinkers. He cherished his seven grandchildren: Danny Loz and Molly Belle Loz, Naomi Leonard, Josie Leonard and Madelyn Leonard, Tucker Leonard and Madison Leonard. He is also survived by his brother Russell Leonard and his sister Helen Leonard Harris, both of Pelham, NH.
Ernie resided and was well cared for at Maplewood Nursing Home, where Shirley currently resides.
A celebration of life will be held at Maplewood Nursing Home in Westmoreland, NH, on Saturday July 28th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm outside under the pavilion. Attendees can park in the back of the nursing home and walk to the outside courtyard. We will celebrate Ernest Leonard's life, July 15th, 1929 - July 20th, 2018. Please come and remember Ernie and share stories.
