ETHELYN MABEL SARGENT
LITTLETON, NH -- With family at her side, Ethelyn Mabel Sargent peacefully passed from life on earth to reunite with her mother, Bernice (Wolfson) and father, Alton Shuttleworth in eternal life. Ethelyn was born on August 26, 1932 in Lebanon, NH as the only child of Alton and Bernice and her early youth was spent with her parents between family farms in Canaan, NH and Ayers Cliff, Canada. Her elementary and secondary education occurred primarily in Ayers Cliff with some time spent at Littleton (NH) area schools as her father and mother eventually settled in the Littleton/Lisbon area.
Ethelyn's post-secondary education was at the Mary Hitchcock Hospital School of Nursing in Hanover, NH where she earned her registered nurse credential. Her nursing career included time at the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, Littleton Hospital, as the office nurse for Dr. George Imrie and occasionally filling in as school nurse at Littleton Schools. She provided nursing coverage at her close friend Rita Cascadden's elderly housing residence and also volunteered at Red Cross Blood drives.
While attending Mary Hitchcock, Ethelyn enjoyed the many activities that the bustling college town of Hanover had to offer. Skiing, biking, teaching others how to win at the card game Bridge were some of her favorite activities when not hitting the books and working the floor at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital. Dartmouth Winter Carnivals were amongst those fond memories of her time spent in the Hanover area. Known to her Mary Hitchcock class mates as "Red" or "Shut", Ethelyn left Hanover with numerous life time friends and reunited with them through the years at MHSON reunions.
As a young woman Ethelyn's wit, charm, intellect and beauty (with red hair that made others wish they had red hair) beguiled young men from Canada to northern NH but it was Donald Sargent, an aspiring businessman from Littleton who captured her heart and became her husband on September 21, 1957. Don's career took him and Ethelyn and their family to Westbrook, Maine and Townsend, MA, but both of their hearts and families were in the Littleton area and they returned in the winter of 1968 eventually settling in their home at the corner of Oak Hill Avenue and Pleasant Street where she and Don lived until her passing.
Ethelyn is survived by Donald, her loving and devoted husband of over 60 years and children, Jeffrey (spouse Martha Coombs), Sara (spouse Ricky Marvin), and William. Her grandchildren include Drucilla and Isobel Sargent and Ryan Marvin. Her surviving family also includes numerous cousins on both the Wolfson and Shuttleworth sides of her lineage and a sister-in-law Charlotte and nieces and nephews on Donald's side of the family.
SERVICES -- A committal service will be conducted at Wheeler Hill Cemetery in North Littleton on June 30, 2018 at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Ethelyn's memory to the Arthritis Foundation at www.arthritis.org.
