DR. EUGENE B. MCGREGOR
CONCORD, NH -- Dr. Eugene B. McGregor died on May 6, 2008, at Havenwood-Heritage Heights Retirement Community in Concord, N.H. He was 91 years old. Born July 31, 1916, in Lisbon, N.H., to George G. McGregor and Catherine B. McGregor, Dr. McGregor attended Lisbon Public School before enrolling at Dartmouth College receiving his A.B. degree with the Class of 1937, followed by graduation from Dartmouth Medical School in 1938 and Rush Medical College in Chicago, Ill., in 1940. While interning at Maine General Hospital in Portland, he met Phyllis Oakes Prescott, RN. They were married on May 29, 1941.
Dr. McGregor served in the US Army Medical Corps in World War II at Gorgas Army Hospital in Panama and was discharged with the rank of Major. Following Army service, he did a surgical residency at Maine General Hospital in Portland after which he moved back to Lisbon, N.H., to begin a practice of General and Family Medicine until his retirement in 1985. His practice had a radius of over 10 miles. He had admitting privileges at both the Cottage Hospital in Woodsville and the Littleton Hospital and served as Chief of Staff at both.
In the community, Dr. McGregor served as Chairman of the Lisbon School Board, Trustee of the Lisbon Public Library, Grafton County Medical Examiner, and was a member of the Lisbon Lions Club and the Masons.
In his spare time, Dr. McGregor played golf at the Ammonoosuc/Lisbon Village Golf Club in Lisbon where he was a multiple club champion. He was known as a voracious reader of historical novels, painted, restored furniture, collected coins, and gardened among many other pursuits.
Dr. McGregor is survived by his loving wife Phyllis, two sons Eugene Jr. Bill and Carol of Bloomington, Ind., and James and Jean of St. Johnsbury, Vt., and one daughter Kathryn of Concord, N.H. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Kalb of Evansville, Ind., five grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
SERVICES --A memorial service at the convenience of family and friends will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dr. McGregors memory to the Lisbon Public Library Expansion Fund, 45 School Street, Lisbon, NH 03585.
