EVELYN G. CRAWFORD
WHITEFIELD Evelyn G. Crawford, 97, formerly of Stevensville, MD, passed away at the Morrison Nursing Home in Whitefield on January 25, 2004.
Evelyn was born in New York City on December 3, 1906, a daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Acheson) Gilpin.
Evelyn attended New York Schools including Julia Richman High School, Eastman Gaines Business School, and the New York University School of Retailing where she studied advertising copywriting. She later wrote advertising for several New York department stores including Lord & Taylor, Saks-Fifth Avenue, and Bloomingdales. Subsequently she moved to Maine where her family owned hotel properties and handled advertising and publicity for them.
In 1961 Evelyn married James H. Crawford, the president and founder of General Electronics, Inc. in Washington, D.C. After his retirement in 1969, they moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
Surviving family members include a stepdaughter, Mrs. Robert C. Witham of Naples, FL; a niece, Mrs. Samuel J. Williams of Boynton Beach, FL; a nephew, George E. McAvoy of Littleton, NH; and several grandnieces and nephews. Her husband, James, predeceased her in 1988.
