Frederic Robert Dawe, sometimes affectionately called Phred by his family, age 85, died Monday, August 22, 2011, at the White River Junction VA Medical Center, Vermont. He was born August 27, 1925 in Boston, Massachusetts, the youngest son of William James & Sophia (Hacker) Dawe. He grew up in the Dorchester section of Boston.
In 1942, he joined the Navy, rising to Signalman 2nd Class, serving on a sub chaser in the Battle of the Caribbean, and then on the USS Eager, including action off the coast of Okinawa. After the War, he graduated from Center College in Danville, Kentucky with a degree in English.
Returning to Boston, a blind date with Janice Fifield led to marriage in 1954 and fifty years of romance. She passed away in 2005. The father of two children, he lived in Beverly, Massachusetts; North Conway, New Hampshire; and Webster, New Hampshire.
He started in advertising at Lynn Gas & Electric. Advancing quickly, he joined the Security National Bank in Lynn. Leaving there as a vice-president, he worked for several banks before becoming president of one in North Conway, New Hampshire. A start-up bank in Hanover, New Hampshire hired him as the Chief Executive Officer. From scratch, he turned the sole office of the Hanover Bank & Trust Company into a multi-bank, multi-million dollar operation before its acquisition by BankEast.
Retired, he enjoyed the country life on the shores of Lake Winnepocket in Webster, constantly looking for new ideas for business development. He was involved in many organizations throughout his life from the Lynn Chamber of Commerce to the Shriners to the Veterans of Foreign Wars to the Webster Congregational Church.
Fred joins his wife, Janice Dawe, after six years without her, and leaves behind a daughter, Elizabeth St. Amand & her husband, Gerard of Enfield, NH; their children, Stacey Dillon & her husband, Michael, and their three children, Ryan, Kyle, & Emma of Warner, NH; Sara St. Amand of Enfield, NH; and Nicholas St. Amand & his wife, Christine, of Standish, Maine; and a son, James Clark-Dawe & his wife, Cathryn, of Webster, NH; their children Chris Dawe, of Provo, UT; and Kate Clark-Hollocher, of Port Orchard, WA. He also leaves one nephew, Bill Dawe & his wife, of Watertown, MA.
Memorial services will be held Friday, September 2 at 1 P.M. at the Webster Congregational Church, 1013 Long Street, Webster where the Rev. Carol Shelton will officiate. A reception will follow in the Webster Town Hall.
Burial will be held privately at a later date.
