FREDERICK W. GRIFFIN
FRANCONIA, NH -- Frederick W. Griffin, 91, of Franconia, New Hampshire died on Sunday October 5, 2008, at the Lafayette Center, following a brief illness.
Born in Manchester, New Hampshire in 1917 son of Vaughn and Grace Griffin.
Fred graduated from Phillips Andover in 1935. He was the first exchange student to Wellington College in England. He graduated from Harvard in l940. He volunteered for Navy in June of 1942 and became an Ensign, teaching at the naval school in Chicago; he then later served in the Pacific as a first lieutenant.
During his lifetime Fred was President of the New Hampshire Independent Agents, 1968 to 1969; Chairman, Mid Merrimack Health Planning Council; on the board of the Spaulding Youth Center; Trustee, Elliot Hospital, Manchester, NH.; vice president of the Audubon Society of New Hampshire; chairman, Norwin and Elizabeth Bean Foundation; director of New Hampshire Charitable Foundation; founding director of the Northern New Hampshire Charitable Foundation; Citizen of the Year 1981, Manchester, NH.; vice-chairman Bank East, Manchester, NH.; chairman of Planning Board, Franconia, NH for 6 years; first recipient of the Community Service Award for the North Country United Way of Littleton. He loved tennis, golf, skiing, mountain climbing and his family and friends.
Fred is survived by his loving wife, Ruth, of 67 years; daughter, Barbara and husband, Robert Ludwig of Wakefield, MA; son, Frederick W. Jr. and wife, Martha Griffin of Kennebunkport, ME.; daughter, Robin and husband, Robert Foster of Waitsfield, VT.; and daughter, Bonnie Griffin of Boise, ID. He is also survived by his sister, Jane and husband, Robert Greene of Dallas, TX, and sister-in-law, Marjorie Griffin of No. Andover, MA; Fred had 6 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
SERVICES -- A Memorial Service will be held October 25th at 11:00 a.m. at the Franconia Community Church.
