Gary A. Leckman, 73, of Manchester, NH, died October 18, 2008, at his residence following a long battle with cancer.
Mr. Leckman was born on November 8, 1934, in Minot, North Dakota, the son of the late Luther and Marjorie (Allen) Leckman. He was a resident of Manchester for the past 53 years.
Prior to his retirement, Mr. Leckman was employed for 35 years, as a lineman for Public Service of New Hampshire.
He was a veteran having served in the United States Air Force and the United States Navy.
Mr. Leckman was a member and past president of the Nu Voice Club. He was a speaker for the NH Lung Association, where he would make presentations in various Jr High and High Schools throughout the area, encouraging students not to smoke and educating them about the dangers of smoking. He then started the Breath or Death Foundation, in which he spoke against smoking to many schools, including community colleges. Mr. Leckman also volunteered at the Aviation Museum of NH.
He enjoyed motorcycling, and traveling, taking road trips to various locals, and spending time with his family.
Members of his family include, his 4 daughters, Tammy Quiroga, of Manchester; Heidi McCloskey, also of Manchester; Marnie Gordon, of Nashua; Amy Leckman, of Manchester; 2 granddaughters, 2 grandsons; 1 sister, Janet Perkins, of Brownwood, TX; several nieces and nephews.
SERVICES: A memorial gathering will be Thursday, November 6, from 6:00 â 8:00 P.M. at Phaneuf Funeral Home, 243 Hanover Street, corner of Union Street, in Manchester. A memorial service will follow in the funeral home chapel at 8:00 P.M. Chaplain Gary Andy, will officiate the service. Burial will take place at a later date in the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, in Boscawen.
It has been suggested that those who wish may make memorial gifts to The American Lung Association of NH, 20 Warren Street, Ste 4, Concord, NH 03301 or to VNA Hospice, 33 S. Commercial Street, Suite 401, Manchester, NH 03104, in memory of Mr. Leckman.
