Gary A.
Simard
Mar 2, 1943 — Sep 12, 2026
Tilton, NH
Gary A. Simard, 83, of Tilton, NH, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2026, following a period of declining health. He was born in Nashua, NH, on March 2, 1943, the only child of Ernest and Anna (Winn) Simard. Gary held fond memories of his childhood and especially treasured the love and sacrifices of his parents, who always made certain their family had what they needed.
As a young man, Gary dreamed of becoming a meteorologist and had an enduring fascination with the weather. His plans eventually took a different direction when he chose to serve his country. Gary proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam era from 1964 to 1979. He began his military career in the Army before transferring to the Army National Guard, where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and served as Chief of the Firing Battery. His years of military service instilled in him a strong appreciation for camaraderie, loyalty, and looking out for others.
Following his military career, Gary continued to find ways to serve his community and fellow veterans. He was active with the VFW, where he led a bingo group for the VA in Manchester, served as a chaplain, and participated in the Color Guard. He later became a member of the New Hampshire Veterans Home community, joining the Home in March 2014. During his years there, Gary embraced the friendships, activities, and companionship that surrounded him. He served as Sergeant at Arms with the Resident Council and the many friendships he cultivated during his time at the New Hampshire Veterans Home brought him great happiness.
Gary enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He always looked forward to going to the Boston Red Sox games with his son Christopher which became a frequent occurrence. He could often be found enjoying the sunshine daily. A devoted New England sports fan, he enthusiastically followed his favorite teams. At the Veterans Home, he enjoyed coffee socials, music and movies, playing cards, cribbage, bingo, and word games that helped keep his mind sharp. His quick wit, humor, and friendly nature made him a welcome presence wherever he went. Above all else, Gary's greatest source of pride was his family. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Gary will be remembered as a kind and humble man who valued honesty, friendship, family, and service. His constant encouragement of others to “be true to yourself and everyone else” was a gift he gave to all who had the privilege to know him.
Gary is survived by his daughters, Wendi Simard and Charlene Dearborn; as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three of his children, Christopher Simard, Traci Kruger, and Nicole Hulen.
