George Howard Achilles, age 74 of Lyman, NH, a devoted husband to his wife of 54 years, Linda (Davidson) Achilles, died peacefully September 20.
Born July 26, 1949 in St Johnsbury, Vermont, George was a self-made man. Coming from humble roots, he educated himself as an avid reader and became somewhat of a walking encyclopedia. After serving three years with the US Army, George had a career on the road. As a truck driver he hauled Vermont granite and other cargo to all parts of the continental U.S. When they were lucky, George would alternately take one of his three kids with him. He was a lover of old country music and dreamt of “Waltzing Across Texas” with his love, Linda. George will be remembered for his sense of humor, love of children, and charm at telling stories. He came up with many sayings that will be among his legacy including, “hard sayin, not knowin” and “I’m in good shape, for the shape I’m in.”
George is survived by his wife and their three children, Betsy Couture of Lyman NH, Georgina Achilles and husband Benjamin Pualwan of Charlotte VT, and George Achilles and wife Nancy Carbonneau of Lyman NH. He was also a father figure to two granddaughters, Angela Achilles & Kristi Thomas and great grandsons, Orison & Archer.
George is also survived by brother-in-law, James LaValley, sisters-in-law, Auralie Achilles & Elizabeth Achilles, as well as countless nieces and nephews who were all so adored.
George was predeceased by his Father, Bernard Achilles, Mother, Mildred Achilles Chamberlin, and all of his 5 siblings- Brothers Bernard, Roy, & Paul and Sisters Hazel & Mildred.
There will not be a public service. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Gale River Cooperative Preschool in Franconia, NH.
