George R Adams, 98 years old, passed to eternal life on March 12, 2025 at 8:42am. He was born on December 9, 1926 in White River Jct., VT to George Rodney and Louise {Milligan} Adams. He was educated in the Hartford, VT School System and in 1943, just days after he turned 17, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He was based in Texas, and trained as a Flight Engineer on the B-29 bomber. On October 15, 1945 he married Myrna Mclean in Old Town, ME. After WWII, George attended Simmons School of Embalming and Mortuary Science in Syracuse, NY, graduating in 1950 and receiving his Funeral Directors License later that year. He was later employed by Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield, VT and in the mid 60’s they sent him to Boston to learn computer programming. In 1969 he and his wife moved to Derry, NH where he commuted to Burlington, MA to work for Houghton Mifflin Book publishers, as a Systems Analyst. He was employed by HMCo until his retirement.
While living in Springfield, George was involved in various fraternal organizations, including the Masons, Eastern Star, Rainbow Girls and DeMolay. He was a 75+ year member of St. John’s Lodge. In Derry, he joined the Knights of Columbus, and was an Honorary Lifetime Member of Bektash Temple Shriners of Concord, NH. In the early 1950’s, he took over the re-organizing of the Civil Air Patrol and solicited help of Ham Radio, A&E mechanics and saw the membership grow to over 100 men, women and children. In 1957 he helped organize the New England Campers Association (NECA), a non-profit, and became the 1st president. He also organized the first chapter of the NECA in Springfield, VT. Eventually the organization out grew New England and went International into Canada, changing the name to NAFCA.
Mr. Adams and his wife were volunteers for Rockingham (NH) County Parent/Child Mediation Program and the Derry Share Program. He was active in Cursillo, Tres Dias and Kairos Prison Ministries, through his membership at the St. Thomas Catholic Church.
George moved to Medford Oregon in June of 2024, to be closer to his daughter and family. In September, he was able to travel to Washington DC with fellow veterans, on Honor Flight of Oregon. He was the only WWII veteran on the trip, and was one of 4 vets to place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This trip was one he had dreamed of, for many years.
George was pre-deceased by his wife of 72 years, Myrna. He is survived by a son Stephen Adams and his wife Catherine, in Ocala, FL, his daughter Bonnie Scriba and husband Frederick (Rick), in Eagle Point, OR, eight grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.
At George’s request, calling hours are respectfully omitted. Following cremation, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 26 Crystal Avenue, Derry NH on Monday, April 7 at 10:00 am. Internment will follow at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local Food Bank, Humane Society or Honor Flight of Southern Oregon.
