He was of Baptist faith and in several churches he attended with his family, he was on financial management committees due to his education and experience.
After graduation he enrolled in Northeastern University's Business Administration program. His college education was interrupted by World War II, whereupon he signed up for military duty in the United States Army Air Corps (predecessor of today's US Air Force), in the 72nd Fighter Squadron. While serving, part of his tour of duty took him to Iwo Jima. He received several medals and ribbons, including the Victory and Good Conduct medals and the Asiatic Pacific and American Campaign ribbons.
Upon returning from service, he finished college and began working for Liberty Mutual Insurance where he started as a claims adjuster and was later promoted to claims manager.
