George S. Gill

George S. Gill, 82, of 62 Palomino Lane, Bedford, died at his residence on June 4, 2002. He was born in Manchester on April 26, 1920, the son of Samuel and Roseanna (Lachapelle) Gill and had been a Bedford resident for the past fifteen years. Prior to that, he had lived in Manchester for most of his life but also resided in Michigan. After his retirement, he and his wife wintered in Port St. John, Florida for over fifteen years. He was a World War II Army Air Corps Veteran and was a B24 pilot during the war. During a supply flight in stateside in 1944, his plane crashed and he was the only survivor. He started his military service with the 172nd New Hampshire Army National Guard as a radio operator. After that, he was with General Patten's 774 Tank Destroyer Unit. After the war, he owned and operated Gill's Bait Shop for 27 years. He also worked for the United States Postal Service for 23 years, retiring as a supervisor. He was a parishioner of St. Elizabeth Seton Church and was a member of the Pinardville Lions Club. He belonged to the American Legion Post 79. He enjoyed traveling in his motor home with his family and traveled extensively throughout North America. Mr. Gill was proud of the fact that he was part Abernaki Indian. He was predeceased by a daughter, Donna Lynn Gill who died in 1949. Family members include his wife of 57 years, Harriet (Schenk) Gill; four daughters, Lana Gagnon and Lynn DiComes, both of Bedford, Dawn Jackson of Manchester and Karin Bolton of Allenstown; two granddaughters and seven grandsons; two sisters, Viola Dussault of Manchester and Constance Perrins of Bedford; and several nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces and cousins. Calling hours will be at Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 250 Coolidge Avenue on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday morning at 10:00 in St. Elizabeth Seton Church. Urn burial with military honors will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Home Health Care, 1850 Elm St., Manchester, NH 03104.
