Dr. George J. Larkin, 84, of Manchester, NH died peacefully at his home, on Wednesday, February 9, 2022.
Dr. Larkin was born on March 12, 1937, in Salem, MA, the son of the late George J. and Mary T. (Healey) Larkin, Sr.
Dr. Larkin, after working at Westford Academy and Sanborn Regional School District in the early to late 60’s, found his home at New Hampshire College. There he began his career as Dean of Students for 14 years and impacted thousands of students with his care and dedication. In 1983 he was promoted to Vice President which he proudly served until his retirement in 2004. He was instrumental in developing the counseling program, student athlete requirements, transition to a new campus, and helped create the Southern New Hampshire University you see today. In his retirement, he worked part time as a Bailiff in the Manchester Court System.
Dr. Larkin earned his Triple Eagle by completing his Bachelors 59', Masters 62', and Doctorate 81' from Boston College. He also played football and captained this team. He was an eagle through and through.
His hobbies and interests included gardening, fishing, reading, horses, sports, his faith and spending time with friends and family. This was of utmost importance to him. He gave back to the community by chairing or being a member of various organizations such as The National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, NH Personnel and Guidance Association, NH Education Association, United Way, Manchester Mental Health, BC Alumni Association, MGSL, Joe Yukica Football Foundation, NH Football Association, Camp Fatima, Camp Bernadette and St. Catherine Church as Parish Council President and a parishioner for over 50 years. He was also involved in multiple committees and councils at NHC / SNHU.
However, his greatest love was spending time with his grandchildren.
Members of his family include; his wife of almost 60 years, Pauline (McNulty) Larkin, of Manchester, NH; a son, Bill Larkin, of Laguna Beach, CA; three daughters, Laurie Larkin and her wife, Kelly of Enfield, Connecticut; Dr. Patricia Larkin-Upton, of Hooksett, NH; Mary Larkin-Quinn and her husband, Daniel of Manchester, NH; three grandchildren, Edward Larkin-Upton, Patrick Quinn and Larkin Quinn; a brother, Stanley Larkin of Salem NH; two sisters, Kay-Ann Stowe (deceased) of Meadview, AZ; Marilyn McCarthy, of Rowley, MA; loving cousins, and several nieces and nephews.
SERVICES: Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 from 5 to 8 PM at Phaneuf Funeral Homes & Crematorium, 243 Hanover Street, in Manchester. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, 10 AM at St. Catherine of Sienna Church, 207 Hemlock Street, in Manchester. Committal prayers will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum, in Manchester.
