George Carl Mitchell, 69 of Vernon passed away on Saturday November 5, 2011 at his home.
He was born in Stowe, VT December 1, 1941 the son of William and Marjorie (Zeno) Mitchell. He was raised on farms in Stowe and Fairfield. He attended schools in Fairfield and Westminster West. George had worked for the Brattleboro Retreat, Lawrence Leathers in Winchester and Fulflex. Mr. Mitchell was a member of the National Guard for 6 years during the 1950's
George was an avid gun collector and outdoorsman. He was a member of the NRA and loved hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed photography and foraging mushrooms.
George is survived by his faithful companion of 29 years, Esther Johnson, and her three daughters, Betty Squires, Barbara Piper and Brenda Damon; his brother Frank Mitchell and his wife Mary of Putney, his three sisters, Zoa Given of Brattleboro, Virginia Hughes of Fairfield, VT and Karen Towle of Hinsdale, NH. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents William and Marjorie he was predeceased by his brothers William and Charles and his sister Janice.
Funeral Services will be held on Wed. at 2:00 PM at the Ker-Westerlund Funeral Home, 57 High St. Brattleboro with the Rev. Bruce C. Burks officiating. A time of visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior the service at the funeral home. Graveside committal services and burial will follow in Tyler Cemetery. A reception will follow at the George's Home on Newton Hills Road.
