George H. Newton, 77, of Franklin passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 9, 2016 following a period of declining health.
George was born in Biddeford, ME on November 11, 1938 to Harold and Gertrude (Freeman) Newton. He was raised in Saco and attended school at Thornton Academy, but completed his high school education in Pawtucket, RI. Following graduation, George entered the US Air Force where he proudly served his country for 12 years, which included 2 tours of duty and time stationed in Germany and England. On July 4th, 1963, his first day stationed in England, he met Elsie Greaves working in the Base gift shop. The two were married in November of 1964 and moved to the United States in 1966. They settled in New England and raised 3 wonderful children together. George worked as a salesman with Diamond International Lumber until retirement. He had a deep love of Big Band music and enjoyed spending quiet days at home reading.
George is survived by his wife of 51 years, Elsie (Greaves) Newton; his son David Newton and wife Mary; son Jason Newton; daughter Michelle Robinson and husband David; grandchildren Michael and Sarah Newton; brother Robert Newton and wife Diane of RI; cousin Sharon Newton of ME; and his beloved German Shepard , Diesel.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Paul Friend, Dr. Samuel Aldrich, the entire staff of the Peabody Home and Barbara Scott with VNA of Franklin for their kindness and compassionate care they provided for George over the years.
A committal service with military honors will be held Wednesday, July 20th at 12:30pm at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway in Boscawen. In lieu of flowers donations in George's memory may be made to the Fallen Heroes Fund at www.fallenheroesfund.org where 100% of donations made go toward the organizations programs. Phaneuf Funeral Homes & Crematorium is assisting the family with arrangements.
