Gerald D. McNeil passed away at the age of 80 on Thursday, June 12th, 2025 in his home surrounded by his loving family in Ashby MA.
Gerry was born in Portland ME and grew up in Gardner MA. He was the son of Thomas and Theresa (O’Neil) McNeil. He attended Fitchburg State College and received his bachelor's in math education. He served in the US Army Engineer Corps from August 1966-1970 in Vietnam and in Germany. Cape Breton, Nova Scotia was a special place for Gerry; he spent time during the summers visiting family there and lived in Loch Lomond in the early 70’s. He worked as a builder and as a teacher at New Hampshire Technical College. His buildings were known for their geometric creativity, comfort and energy efficiency. He also worked as a realtor and broker for many years, helping people find their first and next homes.
Gerry loved playing with his grandkids, traveling, reading, biking, and hiking. He loved working and listening to oldies.
Gerry leaves behind his partner Maureen Davi, his sons Calum, Brent (Josie), Craig, Luke, and Kurt, as well as his 5 grandchildren Gineva, Morgan, Kiernan, Rebecca and Pheona. He is also survived by his siblings Mary Pentecost, George (MaryEllen Greene), Sylvia Girard (David). He is predeceased by his parents, by his sisters Holly Cote and Theresa Doane, and by his infant son Kyle.
Gerry was known for his sense of adventure, quiet demeanor and excellent listening skills. He was consistent in giving his honest opinion and always looking for a place to use his sense of humor. He understood the complexities of this world in ways many did not and was always meeting people with humility and connection. He was a man of inspiration among his children, their friends and his community. He would often prefer to hold the baby then anything else and would travel for hours, sometimes across the country, to spend an afternoon with his children and grandchildren.
