Manchester - Gertrude Scharfenstein, 88, died November 7, 2004 in her home after a long illness. She was born in Remscheid, Germany the daughter of Ernst and Anna (Schroeder) Schmidt on April 26, 1916 and lived there until 1961 when she and her husband, Karl, moved to New York City to follow their daughter. They later moved on to Londonderry and then Manchester, NH. Gertrude was a homemaker who loved to cook and care for her family. She also enjoyed chess and Chinese checkers. Her infectious smile, and the twinkle in her eyes, will be sorely missed. She loved to garden and the ocean. She is survived by her daughter, Bruni Corriveau, of Manchester. IN HER LIFE:Loving and devoted wife for 48 years to the late Karl Scharfenstein. She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.She is survived by her grand-daughter, Trish Burger, of Natick, MA and her two great grand-daughters, Ellie and Katie; and several nieces and nephews in Germany. In her younger years Gertrude loved to travel and enjoyed escorting her family and friends from Germany to our nations capital and other historical landmarks. There will be a Memorial Reception on Saturday, November 13th from 12:00 until 12:30 PM with a candlelight service at 12:30 PM at the Phaneuf Funeral Home, 243 Hanover Street in Manchester.
