Gertrude "Trudy" Smart Wells, 88, of Concord, NH, died Tuesday, March 4, 2014 after a 10 year battle with Alzheimer's disease.
She was born in Dover, NH, the only child of the late Forrest H. and Elizabeth (Batchelder) Smart of Durham, NH on July 15, 1925. Trudy graduated from Dover High School in 1943 and attended the University of NH in the late 1940's. She married the late Ralph D. Wells in 1947, and together they raised their family in Reading, MA in the late 1950's through the 1960's.
After raising two sons, Trudy returned to work for the American Mutual Insurance Company in Wakefield, MA within the human resources department. In later years she retired from the Town of Reading as the assistant to the Town Manager. After retirement, she returned to live in Newmarket, NH so that she could be close to her beloved hometown of Durham.
Trudy was an avid reader, photographer and lover of cats. She loved most spending time with her family and friends at the family camp on Lake Winnipesaukee. Post retirement, Trudy enjoyed researching the Smart's family history within the Town of Durham, she was the 11th and last generation of Smarts to live there.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Durham Historical Association, 15 Newmarket Road, Durham, NH 03824, or the Concord-Merrimack County SPCA, 130 Washington St, Penacook, NH 03303.
The family is planning a celebration of Trudy's life in Moultonborough, NH later this year.
