Gloria Spanko

Gloria Spanko, 87, passed away on Thursday June 21 at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.

Gloria was born in Wantagh, New York on January 4, 1925, the daughter of Eugene and Marcella Crokus. She was a graduate of Freeport High School in Long Island, New York.

After graduating from high school, Gloria worked as a bookkeeper at Keyes Fibre Co. in New York city, where she met her husband, Edward Spanko. They were married in 1947 and lived in Wantagh until Ed retired in 1981 and they fulfilled their dream of moving to Vermont, where they settled in West Brattleboro. Gloria moved to Vernon Hall in 2009.

She was an active participant in the Catholic church, at both St. James parish on Long Island and St. Michael's in Brattleboro. Gloria embraced all of life with enthusiasm and curiosity and loved being part of the lives of her family and friends. She particularly enjoyed being near the ocean and the mountains and was an avid reader and New York Yankee fan. Her ability to transcend her physical limitations with grace and humor will be remembered by all who knew her.

Gloria was predeceased by her husband Edward and her brother Eugene Crokus, Jr. She is survived by her two daughters, Janet Rasmussen of Vernon VT and Jill Deaett of Hinsdale NH, sons in law Bruce Rasmussen and Francis Deatt and her sister Nancy Brennan of Hampstead, North Carolina. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, all of who brought her great joy.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, June 27, at 1:00 p.m. in St. Michael's Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Michael's cemetery. There are no calling hours.
