Gordon J. Forrett-1930-2013
On Saturday August 17th a good man passed from the earth. Born on September 3rd 1930, Gordon was the sixth of seven children born to Alfred and Alice (Monmaney) Forrett. He was raised in Brattleboro and shared many fond memories of his childhood, his education at Saint Michaels, and the variety of jobs he held as a young man coming of age in Brattleboro in the late 1940's.
In the summer of 1950, Gordon enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 20. He gives great credit to his service in the Army for his development as a man and his love for travel. He was deployed in Europe during the Korean Conflict. And it was while he was stationed in San Antonio, Texas that he met and married his wife, Arlene Gathje Forrett.
Gordon was a loving husband to Arlene who passed away in 1989 and father to their four children-Jay Forrett, Maria Glabach, Martin Forrett, and Deb Forrett. Gordon took pride in his children and grandchildren.
Gordon will be remembered for the lives he touched as a Boy Scout leader, a tireless advocate for Disabled American Veterans, and member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Putney, Vermont. An avid outdoorsman, Gordon loved hunting, fishing, hiking, and gardening. He was fortunate to travel extensively during his retirement and loved to share the humor and lessons of his adventures.
His final wishes to rest in the sun, feel the wind, and be free were peacefully granted in the comfort and embrace of family.
Friends and loved ones are invited to join Gordon's family for a graveside service at St. Michael's Cemetery, Oak Grove Road, Brattleboro, VT on Tuesday, August 27th at 10am. The Ker-Westerlund Funeral Home, 57 high St., Brattleboro has been entrusted with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gordon's memory and honor can be made to, Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 52 Old Depot Rd Putney, VT 05346 or Disabled American Veterans, P.O.
