Hal Thornton passed unexpectedly on December 22, 2025, while visiting Playa del Carmen, Mexico. True to who he was, Hal did not follow a conventional path in life, and he would not have wanted a conventional remembrance either.

Exceptionally intelligent and endlessly curious, Hal left school early simply because he was bored. He went on to ace his GED without studying and continued to educate himself throughout his life. He was deeply knowledgeable in history, politics, and software engineering, all self-taught. Learning, for Hal, was never about credentials. It was about understanding the world.

Hal had a remarkable eye for photography, a gift that flourished during his time as a wedding photographer in Charleston, SC. He had a way of seeing moments, not just images, and capturing the emotion and story within them. This is evident in the pictures of his many adventures.

Adventure was woven into Hal’s life. From his time serving in the U.S. Marines to his final days, he sought experiences that brought him closer to the world and the people in it. He gravitated toward warm places, traveled often, and formed genuine friendships everywhere he went. Riding ATVs and dune buggies, trekking through deserts on camels, swimming in oceans and exotic pools, standing in awe before Mayan temples, the Nazca Lines, ancient ruins, Star Wars movie sets, and breathtaking waterfalls. Hal lived a life many dream about, but few actually pursue. He didn’t need a bucket list. He was already living it.

What mattered most to Hal, though, was people. His kindness, generosity, and complete lack of judgment were immediately felt by anyone who spent time with him. He would give the shirt off his back or his last two dollars to someone he believed needed it more. From “loans” to a personal chef to help start a business, to buying a month’s worth of groceries for a struggling father and his daughter, to driving a friend’s car up the East Coast and flying back home, buying tires so a friend could travel safely, and contributing to rent for a newly single dad, Hal showed his love through action.

He was easy to talk to, deeply supportive, and genuinely present. Hal was only a momentary stranger to countless lifelong friends. Through his stories and photographs shared online, family, friends, and even people he had just met felt connected to his adventures and to him.

Forever missing him is his mother, Gail Eaton, and her partner, Don, of Auburn, NH; his father, Harry Thornton; his sister, Laura Briggs; his nephews, Justin and Nicholas Briggs; and his niece, Alison Briggs, all of the family compound in Candia, NH. He also leaves behind aunts, uncles, many cousins, close friends and their children who lovingly called him Uncle Hal, and many friends around the world. His brothers with 3/8 were family to him, men he respected deeply and carried with him long after his time in the Marines.

Hal lived freely, loved openly, and experienced the world on his own terms. He will be remembered for how he lived, not just that he lived.

Hal’s family will be hosting a potluck gathering for Hal with love, memories, and stories on Saturday, May 2nd, from 1–5 pm at the American Legion, 5 Riverside St., Hooksett, NH.
