Howard W. Keegan, 98, of Manchester, NH died peacefully on Tuesday, March 15, 2022 in Hudson, NH with his family by his side.
Mr. Keegan was born on November 17, 1923, in Greenfield, NH the son of the late Frank and Helen Wadleigh Keegan.
He was a veteran of World War II and served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army Air Forces. He was shot down over Munich, captured and held prisoner of war.
Mr. Keegan graduated from Amherst College and Harvard Business school. He began his career in banking at Shawmut National Bank in Boston and moved to New Hampshire with his family in 1962. Prior to his retirement, he was Chairman & CEO of Amoskeag National Bank & Trust Company. He helped many NH businesses, large and small, achieve their goals.
He actively supported non-profit organizations as Director of the Red Cross, United Way, Boys and Girls Club, New Hampshire Symphony, Manchester Federated Arts, New Hampshire Commission for the Arts, Manchester YMCA, New Hampshire Sweepstakes Commission and numerous other organizations. He was awarded Manchester Citizen of the Year in 1983. He loved skiing, hiking, playing tennis and golfing. He was an avid runner participating in local races including the Mt. Washington Road Race and running the New York Marathon in under 4 hours at age 60.
Mr. Keegan leaves behind his sons, Gary D. Keegan and his wife Elizabeth and Geoffrey H. Keegan and his wife Mari; his granddaughter, Kate Fenimore and her husband Frank; his grandsons, Rob, Tom and Geoff Keegan; two great-grandchildren, Harper and Harrison Fenimore; as well as several extended family members and friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Janet (Davis) Keegan who died in October 2019, and by his daughter, Lynda Keegan who died in June 2013.
SERVICES: Calling hours will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2022, from 4 – 7 PM at Phaneuf Funeral Homes & Crematorium, 243 Hanover Street in Manchester NH. A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 25, 2022, at 10:00 AM at Grace Episcopal Church, 106 Lowell Street in Manchester NH. Committal prayers will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Bedford, NH.
Donations can be made to the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation in memory of Mr. Howard W. Keegan.
