James Gordon Nolen, 90, of Concord, NH passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Tuesday, October 3, 2023. Gordon had bravely battled Alzheimers for 7 years, never losing his cheerful outlook on life. Gordon was born on October 27, 1932, in Stillwater, NY, the son of the late M. James and Josephine M. (Betowt) Nolen.
He was a veteran and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged, Gordon enrolled at the University of Connecticut, earning his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. While at UConn, he was a founding member of the UConn Flying Club and a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.
Prior to his retirement, Gordon was employed as an electrical engineer and worked for FPE Electrical Supply.
He enjoyed numerous hobbies during his very active life including being a NH High School hockey referee, sailing the waters off the Maine coast, rowing on Lake Winnipesaukee, skiing the Alps, hiking the White Mountains, playing tennis at the Bedford Bluffs, being a Bedford Rotary Club member, and so much more.
Members of his family include; his wife, Judith A. (Heideklang) Nolen, of Londonderry, NH; children Michael Nolen, DO, of Tuscon AZ; Brian Nolen, of Bedford, NH; Diane Nolen-Dobinski and husband, Bob, of Hopkinton, MA; Patrick Nolen of Upper Marlboro MD; Janet Gamache and husband, Paul, of Venice, FL; Lois Fahey and husband, Todd, of Bedford, NH. He leaves behind his sister Marguerite Amodeo and his brother Thomas Nolen. He was preceded in death by his sister Norma Smith and his former first wife, Rosalie Nolen. He was a cherished grandfather to seven grandchildren, and had recently become a great-grandfather.
SERVICES: There are no calling hours. A graveside service will be held on Friday, October 27, 2023 at 1 p.m. at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, 110 D.W. Highway in Boscawen, NH.
