Jane L. Hurley

Jane Grass Hurley, 94, of Brattleboro, VT, passed away at Pine Heights on October 11, 2023.  Born in Merrick, Long Island, NY on September 14, 1929, daughter of the late Fred and Loretta Muhlbauer.

She was a 1946 graduate from Mepham High School and received a Bachelors of Science Degree in Elementary Education from SUNY Cortland in 1950.

Jane married Albert Grass on August 6, 1950. She taught third grade in Ithaca, New York and fourth grade at the Academy School in West Brattleboro for a short time. Jane married Edward Hurley in 1996. They had nineteen wonderful years together before Ed’s passing in 2010.

She taught Baton twirling and dance in all the Brattleboro schools from 1965-1994, which she was passionate about. The highlight of her career was preparing the BUHS Majorettes for their performance in the 1981 “Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade,” in New York City. The BUHS Band is the only band in the state of Vermont to ever achieve this honor.

She served on the Brattleboro Winter Carnival Board, was a member of The American Association of University Women, and served as Co-Chairman of hospitality for eight years. Jane also served on the Community Chest board in the early 1970’s.

She leaves her three children, Linda “Lindy” Grass Poling and husband Dr. Barclay Poling of Williamsburg, VA, Dr. William Grass and wife Elizabeth of Greenfield, MA, and Dr. Jeffrey Grass and wife Lorrie of Shaker Heights, OH; grandchildren Ashley E.Poling, Christina Grass Reynolds, Alexandra Grass Wood, Maxx Grass, and Samm Grass.

Jane was predeceased by her beloved husband Edward Hurley, her brother Dr. William Muhlbauer, and her grandson Nicholas Grass.

A gathering will be held on Wednesday, October 18^th at 10 am, at Ker Phaneuf Funeral Home & Crematorium, located at 57 High St. Brattleboro, VT 05301. A memorial service will follow at 11 am in the funeral home. Burial arrangements will be held privately with immediate family.
