LITTLETON, NH--- Joan Russell Barker Shaw, 67, of Littleton passed away on September 14th, 2003 at the Littleton Regional Hospital following a long illness.
She was born in Boston, MA on Good Friday, April 10, 1936 the daughter of Dr. John Russell Barker and Cathryn Albro Barker.
Mrs. Shaw graduated from St. Elizabeths School of Nursing and worked as a registered nurse in several hospitals until she joined the United States Navy Nurse Corps. She attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander, serving for ten years at many U.S. Naval Hospitals. Among her duty stations were Naples, Italy, Rota, Spain and Guantonomo Naval Base, Cuba. Mrs. Shaw was a graduate of the Navy anesthesia program and specialized in anesthesia.
Joan and her husband, Paul Agassiz Shaw were married in 1971 following her Navy career. She continued mostly in maternity nursing at Littleton Hospital. Mrs. Shaw was an excellent golfer and swimmer. She also played tennis and attended the Harry Hopman International Tennis Program in Largo, Florida.
Family members include her husband, Paul A. Shaw; daughters and their husbands, Lucy and Paul Van Hollebeke, Jeanne and David Brown, Joan and Kirk Kanya; her sons and their wives, Paul Barker Shaw and Karen Sullivan, Robert and Cathryn Shaw, her daughter, Suzanne Pope Shaw; sisters Cathryn Barker, Suzanne Oldmixon, Julie Cantelli, Molly Barker Shaw; her brother-in-laws Robert Gould Shaw and Frederic Shaw; three brothers John R. Barker, Harry Barker, and Thomas Barker; grandchildren include Lucy Brown, Benjamin Brown, Thomas Van Hollebeke, and John Van Hollebeke.
SERVICES - Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, September 16th from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Pillsbury Funeral Home, 101 Union Street, Littleton, NH. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 17th at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Littleton with the Rev. Father Joseph Klatka as celebrant. Private graveside services will follow later in the day at the Forest Hills Cemetery in Jamaica Plain, MA.
Memorial donations may be made, in her memory, to the Littleton Public Library, Main Street, Littleton, NH.
