John C. Daly
Retired Lowell Firefighter
John Cardinal Daly, 85, of Manchester died April 18, 2012 at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack, NH.
He was born on May 21, 1926 in Lowell, MA the son of the late William F. and Louise (Hanley) Daly. He was educated in Lowell attending Sacred Heart Grammar School and graduating from Lowell High School.
As a young man Mr. Daly joined the United States Army during World War II and served from 1944 to 1946, earning the rank of Corporal.
Following the War, he returned to Lowell and became a firefighter for the city. He served as a firefighter for 32 years.
While living in Lowell, John was active for many years at Sacred Heart Church.
He was a devoted family man, devout Catholic, avid reader and a Red Sox and Patriots fan. A loving, gentle, quiet spoken man with that Irish sense of humor we all enjoyed so much. He delighted in his grandchildren. He was always loving, kind and generous. He loved nature and spending time in North Conway with his brother Eddie. John loved and enjoyed spending quality time with the Huot family especially during the holidays and all the family's special occasions.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son, John "Jack" Daly, Jr. who died in 1990; his brothers, William, Gerald and Paul Daly and his sister, Theresa (Daly) Sullivan.
Surviving family members include his wife of 26 years, Jane (Huot) Daly of Manchester; two daughters, Maura Daly of Dracut and Karen (Daly) Silva and her husband Ray of Lowell; three sons, Gerald, Patrick and Michael Daly all of Lowell; daughter in-law, Nancy (Dowling) Daly of Lowell; brother, Edward Anthony Daly and his wife Carole of Lowell; 3 grandchildren, Kerri (Silva) Rouillard, Megan (Silva) Martinez and Katie Daly all of Lowell; former wife and mother of their children, Kathleen (Powers) Daly of Lowell; a loving niece, who always referred to John as Dad, Lynne McInerney of Royal Palm Beach, FL; six great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends along with the beloved family of Harold Durkin.
The family would like to express their deepest appreciation for the loving care given to John by the staff of the Community Hospice House and by Dr. Fitzmaurice.
Calling Hours are at the Phaneuf Funeral Home, 243 Hanover St, Manchester, NH on Sunday from 3:00 to 8:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10:00 AM at St. Raphael Church, 103 Walker St, Manchester, NH. For those who are unable to attend the calling hours or the mass in Manchester, you are invited to join the family for the committal prayers at St. Mary's Cemetery, 90 River Road, No. Tewksbury, MA immediately following the funeral mass.
