JOHN CURTIS McILWAINE

SUGAR HILL, NH -- John C. McIlwaine, 81, of Sunset Hill Road, passed away suddenly on December 3, 2004.

John was born in New York City on May 5, 1923, a son to Archibald G. McIlwaine II and Caroline (Read) McIlwaine.

John grew up both in New York City and Long Island. He moved to France with his family in 1932 and returned to the United States four years later. After the loss of both parents, John and his brother, Graham, lived in Rye, NY with their aunt and uncle, Edith and Bayard Read. John graduated from St. Pauls School in 1941 and Yale University in 1945. He served in the Navy during World War II.

John married Deborah Packard in 1945 and embarked on an academic career with a graduate degree from Columbia University. John was a teacher at St. Pauls School from 1950 to 1959, and Headmaster of St. Marys-in-the-Mountains from 1960 to 1971. From there he went on to become Director of Admissions at Briarcliff College and Director of Development at Trinity-Pawling School in New York.

While on Sabbatical, he and Debbie traveled to many parts of the world, continuing to explore their appreciation of nature, specifically birds, which was a lifelong passion. John was deeply knowledgeable about flora and fauna and shared enthusiasm with his children and grandchildren. He was President of the Greenwich, Connecticut Audubon Society and was the current President of the Ammonoosuc Chapter of the Audubon Society of New Hampshire. John was also an avid sportsman. He played on the hockey teams at St. Pauls School and Yale University, and coached soccer and tennis at St. Pauls School and St. Marys-in-the-Mountains. He played golf and competitive tennis until the time of his death.

Johns active community life included nearly sixteen years in Rotary, Littleton, and membership at the Profile Club since 1980. He was an active member of the United Church of Christ in Franconia.

His wife, Deborah, predeceased John. He was a devoted father to their surviving children Graham, Penny, Melinda and Sharon McIlwaine, and loving grandfather to eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. His current wife, Jane McIlwaine, and dog, Duncan, of Sugar Hill, NH, and numerous members of two extended families, including those of his late wife Marjorie, survive him. He will be greatly missed.
