Joseph E. Phaneuf, 79, of 145 Anthony Street, died January 7, 2005 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center where he had been a resident in the Nursing Care Facility since 1998. He was born in Sturbridge, MA on March 30, 1925, the son of Kilda and Maria (Dorval) Phaneuf and had been a Manchester resident for most of his life. He attended school in Massachusetts and New Hampshire and was a graduate of Central High School, Class of 1942. He was a U. S. Marine Corps Veteran of WWII and attained the rank of corporal. He was awarded the Purple Heart for combat injuries during the battle of Iwo Jima in March 1945. He was a member of several veterans organizations. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service where he was a letter carrier for many years. He was an avid gardener. He loved to snowmobile, camp, hunt and fish with his family. He was predeceased by his wife, Jeannette (Pilotte) Phaneuf who died in 1963 and by a son, Joseph E. Phaneuf, Jr., who died in 1958. Family members include two daughters, Rita Phaneuf and Susan Charrette, both of Mancheter; four sons, Paul Phaneuf of Manchester, Robert Phaneuf of Hooksett, Richard Phaneuf and Gerard Jerry Phaneuf, both of Manchester; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren; a brother Eugene Phaneuf of Manchester; a sister, Shirley Lacerte of Manchester; and many nephews, nieces and cousins. In His Life: He loved his eight grandchildren, Scott Charrette, Stacy Charrette, Teena Phaneuf, Timothy TJ Phaneuf, Jamie (Phaneuf) Bolduc, Nicholas Phaneuf, Dayna Phaneuf and Derek Phaneuf and also his four great grandchildren, Hunter Bolduc, Madyson Bolduc, Connor Charrette and Ethan Charrette. Calling hours will be at Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 243 Hanover Street on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday morning at 10:00 in St. Anthony Church. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Augustin Cemetery.
