Joseph J. Santangelo Sr., 88, of Manchester passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 14th.

Joe was born in Boston, MA on September 22, 1923, the son of Salvatore and Maria (Augello) Santangelo. He lived in Boston's North End until 1943 when he enlisted in the United States Army. Joe proudly served his country in several campaigns including Normandy (DDay +6), Northern France, Rhineland, The Battle of the Bulge in Ardennes and Central Europe and was also involved in the Army Occupation of Germany following WWII. After his overseas military service, Joe was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Boston Fire Department Auxiliary. He was employed by Honeywell for a period of time and eventually went to work as a machinist at Hewlett-Packard and retired after 26 years.

Joe was a passionate Red Sox fan who also loved horseracing. He will be remembered fondly for his wonderful sense of humor.

Joe is survived by two sons, Joe Santangelo Jr. of San Diego, CA and Paul Santangelo and his wife, Maureen of Pelham; two grandchildren Matthew and Catherine Santangelo of Pelham; sisters Nancy Biarrio of Arlington, MA and Susan Moccia of Windham; Godson Salvatore Moccia and his wife, Becky of Hampstead; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by his wife, Barbara, and his brothers John and Tony Santangelo.
